Why Your Gutters Are Leaking & How to Fix Them

If you have a gutter system that’s not clearing precipitation away from your roof, then it’s simply not doing its job. Your gutters serve a simple, albeit important purpose: They keep water flowing off of your roof and away from your home. When that doesn’t happen, your home can incur damage. Your foundation can flood in a heavy storm if water isn’t flowing away from your home, and your attic may take on moisture if you have spots that are enduring pooling. We find that gutter issues like this can be caused by a variety of reasons. Here are the most common causes of gutter malfunction, as well as information on why it’s wise to act right away when your gutters do give out.

Old Gutters

Gutters are built to last for decades, but they don’t last forever. If you live in a home that hasn’t seen gutter replacement in the last several years, your gutters may simply fail due to wear and tear. Over time, the seams between gutter can rust and give out, which means that water can end up cascading down the walls of your home. If you can see gaps between your gutters, or water flowing where it shouldn’t be, then your gutters may be outdated.

Damaged Gutters

Similarly, your gutters may just get damaged. Branches can fall on your gutter system, knocking the gutters out of shape. Or snow can pile up and weigh down your gutters, and with enough pressure, your gutters can snap if not warp.

Clogged Gutters

Now, fortunately, this is an easy one. If you have gutters with any obstruction in them, water may pool on your roof. While that’s bad news, clogged gutters are relatively easy to remedy. If you’re comfortable on a ladder, you can clear out leaves, twigs and anything else that’s gunked up the works. If you’re not a do-it-yourselfer, you should hire a gutter cleaning outfit. It’s worthwhile to clear out your gutters to keep water from damaging your roof.

A Stitch in Time

If you notice an issue with your gutters, it’s best to act right away. After all, you never know when the next storm is going to hit. Plus, if you leave an issue unattended, you could be facing major damage to your home, and down the road, that can mean costly repairs. So, instead of shelling out thousands to repair your home, as well as a few hundred for gutter replacement or repair, just do the latter: Repair or replace your gutters right away.
