Window Replacement in Sterling Heights, MI

Windows for a City That Grew Up Fast

Sterling Heights went from 14,622 residents in 1960 to 61,365 in 1970 and 108,999 in 1980. The city itself was only incorporated in 1968. A population boom that steep means a very large share of the city’s houses went up in the same two decades, and that is exactly what homeowners call us about now: ranches, colonials and split-levels whose windows are either original, or were replaced once, a long time ago.

Today Sterling Heights has 134,346 residents and is the fourth most populous city in Michigan. It sits right next door to Clinton Township, so estimates, installations and any follow-up visits are a quick trip from our Hayes Road office.

Common Window Problems in Homes From the 1960s and 1970s

Every house is different, but these are the issues that show up again and again in homes of this age:

  • Aluminum-framed windows. Aluminum conducts cold. In January the frames get icy and sweat on the inside, and the moisture ends up on sills and drywall.
  • First-generation vinyl replacements. Many homes had windows replaced in the 1980s or 1990s. Those units are now old enough that seals have failed, balances are worn, and vinyl has yellowed or warped.
  • Worn horizontal sliders. Sliders are common in ranch homes of this era. They are functional, but old tracks collect dirt and the sashes rarely seal well.
  • Large living room picture windows with a lot of single-pane or early double-pane glass.
  • Painted wood trim from before 1978, which matters for lead-safe work practices during removal.

Brick Homes and Insert Installations

If your Sterling Heights house has brick on the front or all the way around, that changes how windows get replaced. With an insert installation, we take out the old sashes, leave the existing frame in the brick opening, and set a custom-sized new window inside. The brick, the exterior sill and the interior drywall stay untouched, which keeps cost and disruption down.

Insert windows only work when the existing frame is structurally sound, square and not letting water into the wall. When it is not, a full-frame replacement removes the old window down to the rough opening so we can fix what is underneath, then flash and insulate before the new unit goes in. On brick homes that often means extra care around the brick mold and sill. We look at each opening and tell you which approach it needs, and why.

Choosing Styles When You Replace Sliders

Replacement does not mean you have to keep the exact style you have. MI Windows and Doors, one of the window manufacturers we install, builds double-hung, single-hung, casement, awning, horizontal slider, picture and specialty windows including bays and bows. We also install ProVia windows, so you can compare options from both manufacturers at the estimate. Common changes we talk through in Sterling Heights homes:

  • Slider to slider. If you like the look and the opening is wide and short, a new slider with modern weatherstripping is simple and cost-effective.
  • Slider to casement. A casement opens with a crank and closes by pressing the sash into its weatherstripping, which generally seals tighter than a slider. It is a popular swap over a kitchen sink or in a hard-to-reach spot.
  • Slider to double-hung. For taller bedroom openings, double-hungs give a more traditional look, and both sashes tilt in for cleaning.
  • Picture window to bay or bow. A bay or bow window projects outward, adds light from several angles and gives the living room a deeper sill.

Any change of style should respect bedroom egress. If a window is a bedroom’s emergency exit, the new window has to provide enough clear opening. We check that before recommending a swap.

Quieter, Warmer Rooms

Plenty of Sterling Heights neighborhoods sit near busy corridors like M-59, Van Dyke, Mound Road and Utica Road. Old windows let in a surprising amount of traffic noise along with cold air. Modern insulated glass, tighter sashes and a properly sealed installation help with both. One homeowner summed up what she noticed after her project:

We had them replace our old windows with new windows and the impact has been remarkable. Our home is quieter and more energy efficient

Kathy A., Google review

For heat loss, look for the U-factor on the NFRC label; the lower the number, the less heat escapes. Michigan is in ENERGY STAR’s Northern climate zone, and ENERGY STAR Version 7.0 sets a U-factor of 0.22 or lower for windows in that zone. Low-E coatings and gas-filled glass do most of the work, and triple-pane glass is an option to ask about.

What Installation Day Looks Like

  • We protect floors and furniture near each opening.
  • Old sashes come out one window at a time, so the house is never wide open.
  • New windows are set level and plumb, then insulated and sealed around the frame.
  • Exterior trim is capped or sealed so water runs off rather than into the wall.
  • We clean up and walk through how the new windows operate and lock.

Planning Around Order Times and Seasons

Replacement windows are built to the measurements we take, so there is a manufacturing wait between signing and installation. Measuring carefully the first time matters, because a window ordered a half-inch wrong means starting that wait over. We will give you a realistic timeline when you sign rather than a guess.

Window replacement also does not have to wait for summer. Because each opening is removed and replaced before we move to the next, the house is only open to the weather a short time per window. Very cold or wet days can still affect sealants and caulking, and we schedule with that in mind. If you are replacing windows along with siding, we will talk about sequencing so trim and flashing tie together cleanly.

Sterling Heights Window Questions

Can you replace windows in a brick house without tearing out brick?

In most cases, yes. Insert windows fit inside the existing frame, leaving the brick and interior drywall alone. If a frame is rotted, a full-frame replacement is needed, and we will explain what that involves.

Should I replace my aluminum windows?

Aluminum frames conduct cold and often sweat in winter. Modern vinyl frames with insulated low-E glass are far better insulators, so replacement usually makes a noticeable difference.

Can I switch from sliders to casement windows?

Usually. We check the opening size, how you use the room and bedroom egress requirements before recommending a style change.

How close are you to Sterling Heights?

Our office is on Hayes Road in neighboring Clinton Township, a short drive from most Sterling Heights neighborhoods.

We signed a contract with Rock Solid Exterior to replace our siding that blew off in a storm. The previous siding was fairly new, but the previous homeowner hired a “friend” to install it, and it was not properly installed. Rock took the house down to studs, installed OSB, vapor barrier and Royal Celect cellular PVC siding, and it turned out exceptional! I have to admit that I went into the project with some anxiety based on mixed reviews online, but our crew leader Joe was fantastic, and his team worked like a well-oiled machine. They had a high attention to detail, and tolerated my requests for cosmetic perfection, even redoing work they rightly could have said was functionally good. We screwed up and had them do the siding first and then decided we wanted the facia and soffit replaced too, which also caused rework that wasn’t their fault. Through it all, they were pleasant and professional. I know I have high standards and might be unreasonable to do construction projects for, but these guys really delivered. Areas of opportunity – I did have to chase the scheduler more than I wanted to, but when they came, they were in full force!

We had a great experience with Rock Solid Exteriors and would absolutely recommend them. Our home was not an easy siding project, but their team did a fantastic job from beginning to end. One thing that really stood out to us was their communication. Before signing a contract, we spent several weeks pricing our project with multiple companies. During that time, Levi stayed in touch without ever making us feel pressured. He gave us space when we needed it, but continued to follow up and remind us that he was there and ready when we were. He was professional, patient, and really took the time to understand the vision we had for our home. That communication continued once the project began. Joe, our onsite project manager, stayed in consistent contact with my husband, providing updates on the progress of the project and managing expectations along the way. Jeff was also there whenever a hiccup arose and helped make sure things were addressed and kept moving forward. We were equally impressed with the crew. They kept the job site clean and were always respectful while working at our home. Even the little things stood out to us—there was no foul language or inappropriate conversation on the job site, which we really appreciated having a family and young children at home. And, of course, the craftsmanship was top-notch. Our house was a difficult project with a lot of details, and the finished exterior looks fantastic. But what impressed us just as much as the quality of their work was the level of communication throughout the entire process. From our first conversations with Levi, through the project management from Joe and support from Jeff, we always felt like we knew what was happening and who we could reach if we had a question. We’re extremely happy with the transformation of our home and grateful to the entire Rock Solid Exteriors team for their hard work. We would absolutely recommend them!
