Causes of Siding Damage
Siding can be damaged by a variety of factors, many of which are common in Michigan. Some of the most prevalent causes include:
- Weather Conditions: Extreme weather, including hailstorms, heavy snow, and high winds, can cause cracks, dents, and other damage to your siding.
- Moisture: Michigan’s humidity and precipitation can lead to moisture buildup behind the siding, causing it to warp, rot, or develop mold.
- Pests: Insects and rodents can damage siding by burrowing into it or chewing on the material, especially in wood siding.
- Age and Wear: Over time, siding naturally deteriorates, becoming more susceptible to damage. Fading, cracking, and peeling are all signs that your siding may need repair.
- Improper Installation: If the siding is not installed correctly, it may not function as intended, leading to gaps, loose panels, and other issues that can compromise your home’s protection.
Our experts at Rock Solid Exteriors will assess the condition of your siding, identify the underlying issues, and provide targeted repair solutions.
The Risk of Siding Damage
Ignoring siding damage can have severe consequences for your home. Even seemingly minor issues can escalate into major problems if not addressed promptly. Here are some of the risks associated with damaged siding:
- Water Damage: Cracks or holes in siding allow water to seep into your home, leading to rot, mold, and mildew. Over time, this can compromise the structural integrity of your home and result in costly repairs.
- Energy Inefficiency: Damaged siding can cause drafts and reduce your home’s insulation, leading to higher energy bills. Properly maintained siding helps regulate indoor temperatures, making your home more energy-efficient.
- Pest Infestation: Damaged siding creates entry points for pests, including insects and rodents, which can cause further damage and pose health risks.
- Decreased Curb Appeal: Siding damage can significantly detract from the appearance of your home and reduce its market value.
Our team works quickly and efficiently to restore your siding, minimizing the risk of further damage and ensuring your home remains protected.

Repair or Replace? How We Help You Decide
Not every damaged panel means a whole new exterior. On a free estimate we walk the house with you and look at three things: how much of the wall is actually affected, whether the sheathing behind it is still sound, and whether panels that match are still available. A handful of cracked or loose panels on an otherwise healthy wall is a repair. Widespread rot, brittle panels that crack when handled, or damage across several sides of the house usually means replacement is the better value.
If repairs do not make sense, we will tell you and price both options so you can compare them side by side. If they do, we fix what is broken and leave the rest of your siding alone.
What We Repair
Vinyl and insulated vinyl
Cracked, loose, warped and wind-pulled panels, along with the J-channel, starter strip and trim that hold everything in place. Vinyl gets brittle as it ages and in cold weather, so older courses have to be unlocked carefully to avoid breaking the panels above and below the damage.
Aluminum
Older aluminum dents and chalks rather than cracking. We replace damaged sections and match the profile as closely as we can. There is more detail on our aluminum siding repair and replacement page.
Steel and metal panels
We repair steel siding, including the concealed-fastener Vesta steel panels we install on replacement projects.
Fiber cement
As a James Hardie Select Contractor we repair and replace fiber cement boards and trim, including ColorPlus factory-finished pieces, so the patched area holds up the same way the rest of the wall does.
Soffit, fascia and trim
Damage at the roof edge usually shows up as sagging soffit or stained fascia, and it often points to a gutter or ventilation problem rather than the siding itself. We repair the trim and tell you what caused it.
Matching Siding That Is No Longer Made
This is the honest part of any siding repair. Vinyl fades with sun exposure, and manufacturers discontinue profiles and colors regularly, so an exact match on a twenty-year-old wall is not always possible. We match as closely as we can on profile, texture and color family, and we will show you the match before we install it.
When a perfect match is not available, there is a trick worth knowing: we pull good panels from a hidden elevation, such as a garage wall or the back of the house, use those to patch the visible wall, and put the new, slightly different panels where nobody sees them. It is a small extra step that makes the difference between a repair you notice and one you do not.
Storm, Wind and Hail Damage
Michigan storms pull panels loose, crack them with hail and drive water in behind the wall where you cannot see it. After a storm we inspect the siding and document what we find with photos. If you decide to file a claim, we can meet your adjuster at the house and walk through the damage with them. Your insurer decides what is covered, but having the damage documented properly makes that conversation easier.
If the same storm hit your roof, see storm and hail damage roof repair.
What a Siding Repair Visit Looks Like
- Free estimate. We come to the house, look at the damaged area and the walls around it, and give you a written price. No obligation and no sales pitch.
- Materials. We source the closest match we can find and confirm it with you before the repair is scheduled.
- Repair day. We remove the damaged panels and check what is underneath. If the sheathing or the weather barrier behind the siding is wet or rotted, we show you before we cover it back up.
- Cleanup. We haul away the old material and leave the work area clean.
Siding Repair FAQs
How long does a siding repair take?
Most of the repairs we do are finished in a single visit. A larger section, or one where we find rot behind the panels, can take a full day.
Do you repair siding you did not install?
Yes. Most siding repairs we do are on homes sided by somebody else, often years ago.
Can you match siding that is discontinued?
Often, yes, or close enough that you will not pick it out from the street. Where an exact match does not exist we will say so up front rather than surprise you on installation day.
Is it worth repairing older siding?
If the wall underneath is sound and the panels are not brittle, a repair is usually the sensible money. When we think you would be throwing good money after bad, we will say that too.
Do you offer financing?
We offer 0% financing for 60 months on approved credit. Most homeowners use it on full replacements rather than small repairs, but it is there either way.
