In Macomb Township, the siding question is usually not about a 70-year-old house. It is about a 15- to 25-year-old house with builder-grade vinyl that has faded, rattles in the wind or never looked quite as nice as the neighbor’s. Rock Solid Exteriors has installed siding on Macomb County homes since 1997, and subdivisions across the township are within a 5- to 15-minute drive of our Hayes Road office.

Macomb Township Homes: What Your Siding Is Dealing With
A young housing stock that grew quickly
Macomb Township’s 2022 Master Plan reports that SEMCOG counted roughly 14,000 new housing units in the township over two decades, against fewer than 200 demolitions. Owners live in more than 90% of occupied homes, and single-unit homes account for roughly 80% of the housing stock.
Many homes built during a boom like that share a few traits: large wall areas on two-story colonials, vinyl siding chosen for price rather than thickness, and brick or stone often limited to the front elevation. Twenty years later, those big side and rear walls are where fading, waviness and loose panels show up first.
Wind on open ground
The township still has farmland and open space next to many of its neighborhoods, and the Master Plan emphasizes preserving it. Homes that face open fields take more direct wind. Thin vinyl can flex, rattle and eventually unlock in gusts. Heavier vinyl with a proper nailing pattern, or fiber cement and metal, stays put.
Snow, ice and moisture
Michigan winters bring repeated freezing and thawing. On newer homes, the trouble spots are usually where roofs meet walls: above garages, at dormers and along second-story bump-outs, where snow melt runs down the wall. If kick-out flashing or step flashing was skipped or done poorly, water can get behind the siding and into the sheathing. Those areas deserve a close look during the estimate, and a replacement is the time to correct the flashing.
Joe and his install team is the best I have ever come across clean up end of everyday made sure the job was properly wrapped and that the siding perfectly fit…

Upgrading curb appeal in an established subdivision
Once a neighborhood fills in, homes start to look alike. A new siding color, a shake-look gable or a stone wainscot are simple ways to give a production-built house its own character. Before you choose, check whether your subdivision has homeowners association rules about exterior materials or colors.
Vinyl, fiber cement or metal for a newer home?
If your walls are sound and you mainly want better looks and less movement in the wind, a heavier vinyl panel is usually the most economical upgrade. If you want the crisp shadow lines of painted lap siding and a product engineered for freezing winters, James Hardie fiber cement is worth pricing. Metal siding suits homeowners after a modern look and very low maintenance. We will price the options you are curious about side by side so the choice is based on real numbers, not guesses.
How Your Siding Project Moves From Estimate to Cleanup
- Design consultation. We visit, measure, and talk about the look you want and the problems you want solved.
- Product and color selection. Compare vinyl, fiber cement, metal and stone side by side, and judge colors in daylight on your own walls.
- Written estimate. Tear-off, sheathing and flashing repairs, weather barrier, siding, trim, soffit and gutters, all in writing. Financing is available.
- Permits and materials. Rock Solid takes care of any required township permits and places your product order.
- Removal and repairs. The old panels are stripped, problem areas are repaired, and walls are wrapped and flashed.
- Installation. New siding, stone and trim go up, detailed around windows, doors and roof lines.
- Cleanup. Work areas are picked up, and debris and nails are removed.
- Final walk-through. Walk the house with your project lead and go over the product warranties that apply. See our warranties page.
The siding team were fast and very professional. They were able to complete the job 1 day early.

Siding Questions From Macomb Township Homeowners
My home is only 15 or 20 years old. Why is the siding already loose and faded?
Many homes built during fast growth periods were finished with thinner, entry-level vinyl. Thin panels flex more in wind, fade faster on sunny walls and can loosen where they lock together. Nothing is wrong with your house; it is simply a common upgrade point. Thicker vinyl, fiber cement or metal siding will hold up better.
Does my homeowners association need to approve new siding?
Some subdivisions have rules about exterior colors and materials, and some do not. Check your association documents or ask your HOA before you sign. We are happy to provide product names, colors and samples for an approval request.
Can I add stone to the front of my house without replacing all the siding?
Often, yes. Versetta Stone and similar veneers can be added as a wainscot along the foundation, around the entry or on front columns. If your existing siding is in good shape, we can work the stone in around it. If it is worn, it usually makes sense to do both at once.
Will new siding help with drafts in my rooms over the garage?
It can help. Rooms over garages and bump-outs are often drafty because of air leaks in the wall. During a siding replacement, the walls can be re-wrapped and gaps sealed. Insulation inside the walls or floor is a separate job, but new siding is a good chance to tighten up the exterior.
How long does a siding replacement take?
It depends on the size of the house, the product and how much trim and soffit work is involved. Your written estimate includes an expected timeline, and we keep you updated as the work moves along.
