Stamped Concrete Patios, Walkways and Driveways in Southeast Michigan

Stamped concrete gives you the look of natural stone, slate, brick or wood plank at a lower cost than most of those materials, in one continuous surface with no loose pavers to shift or weeds to pull. Getting it right takes timing and experience: the pattern has to be pressed in at exactly the right moment, the color has to be planned, and the slab underneath needs the same careful base and joint work as any Michigan concrete.

Rock Solid Exteriors is a family-owned, locally owned and operated contractor in Clinton Township, serving Southeast Michigan since 1997. We install stamped concrete patios, walkways, steps, pool decks and driveways. Call (844) 757-6543 or book a free in-home concrete estimate.

Where Stamped Concrete Works Best

  • Patios. The most popular use: a stone or slate look for outdoor dining and seating areas. See concrete patios.
  • Walkways and steps. A decorative path from the driveway to the front door.
  • Pool decks. Patterned surfaces around the pool. See concrete pool decks.
  • Driveways and borders. Full stamped driveways, or a plain driveway with a stamped border or apron. See driveway replacement.

Stamped Concrete Patterns and Colors

Popular patterns

  • Ashlar slate and random stone: the look of cut or natural stone pieces
  • Flagstone: irregular natural stone shapes
  • Cobblestone and brick: classic paver looks, often used as borders
  • Wood plank: a boardwalk or deck look without wood maintenance
  • Seamless textures: a stone texture without grout lines

How the color is added

Stamped concrete usually gets two layers of color. A base color is mixed into or broadcast onto the fresh concrete, and a contrasting release color is applied before stamping. The release stays in the low spots of the pattern and gives the surface the depth and variation of real stone. Borders in a different color or pattern are a popular way to frame a patio.

We bring pattern and color samples to your estimate so you can see them against your house, brick and roof.

Stamped Concrete vs. Pavers vs. Exposed Aggregate

  • Stamped concrete is one continuous slab with a patterned surface. No joints between pieces for weeds or ants, and usually less costly than natural stone. It benefits from periodic resealing.
  • Pavers are individual units that can be lifted and reset, but they can shift, settle and grow weeds in the joints.
  • Exposed aggregate shows the natural stones in the concrete for a textured, slip-resistant finish, and is a common choice for driveways and walkways. See exposed aggregate concrete.

Our Stamped Concrete Installation Process

1. Free in-home design estimate

We measure the area, check how water drains, and help you choose size, shape, pattern and colors. You get a written estimate with the scope of work.

2. Excavation and base

Existing concrete or soil is removed, and a compacted aggregate base is installed and graded so water drains away from the house. The base is just as important under a decorative slab as under a plain one.

3. Forms and reinforcement

Forms are set to the final shape, including curves if you want them, and reinforcement is placed according to the project scope.

4. Pour, color and stamp

The concrete is placed and leveled, the base color is applied, the release color goes down, and the stamping mats are pressed in while the concrete is at the right firmness. Timing matters here, and it is why stamped concrete takes an experienced crew.

5. Joints, washing and sealing

Control joints are cut to guide cracking into planned lines, often hidden within the pattern. The excess release color is washed off, and a sealer is applied to bring out the color and protect the surface.

6. Final walkthrough and care instructions

We walk the finished surface with you and explain when you can use it and how to care for it.

What Affects the Cost of Stamped Concrete

Published 2026 cost guides put stamped concrete at about $10 to $20+ per square foot nationally depending on design, and one Metro Detroit guide cites about $18 to $28 per square foot installed for stamped patios. These are typical published ranges, not a Rock Solid quote. The main cost drivers:

  • Size. Small projects often cost more per square foot because setup and crew time are similar.
  • Pattern complexity: one pattern and one color costs less than borders, multiple patterns and hand-applied accent colors.
  • Removal of an existing patio, deck or slab
  • Site prep: excavation, grading and drainage corrections
  • Shape: curves, steps and multiple levels add forming and labor
  • Sealing and add-ons such as steps

Caring for Stamped Concrete in Michigan

  • Reseal periodically. Sealer wears with sun, traffic and weather. Ask us how often we recommend resealing for your surface and use.
  • Go easy on salt. Avoid deicing salts, especially in the first winter; use sand for traction. Never use deicers with ammonium sulfate or ammonium nitrate.
  • Use a plastic shovel instead of a metal blade to avoid scratching the sealer and color.
  • Clean spills quickly, especially grease and oil on driveways and grilling areas.
  • Sealed surfaces can be slick when wet. Ask about slip-resistant additives in the sealer for pool decks and steps.

Stamped Concrete FAQ

Is stamped concrete slippery?

Textured stamp patterns provide some grip, but sealed concrete can be slick when wet. For pool decks, steps and walkways, a slip-resistant additive can be mixed into the sealer. Ask us about it for your project.

Does stamped concrete crack?

Like all concrete, it can crack. Control joints, a well-compacted base and proper drainage keep cracking to planned lines. Joints can often be placed within the pattern so they are less visible.

How often does stamped concrete need to be resealed?

It depends on sun exposure, traffic and the sealer used. We will give you a recommendation for your surface when the job is done.

Is stamped concrete good for Michigan winters?

Yes, when it is installed on a proper base, sealed, and cared for. Freeze-thaw cycles and deicing salts are the biggest threats, which is why sealing and avoiding salt matter.

Can you stamp over my existing patio?

Stamping is done on fresh concrete, so a new stamped surface normally means a new pour. We can remove your old patio and replace it, and we will tell you if your existing slab has any other options.

How long before I can use my new stamped patio?

Foot traffic is usually possible after a short cure period, with furniture and heavier use waiting longer. We give you exact timing for your pour and the weather.

Stamped concrete or pavers: which costs less?

It depends on the design and site, but stamped concrete is often less costly than natural stone and comparable to many paver projects. We can price stamped options for your space so you can compare them with any paver quotes you get.
