Sterling Heights has tens of thousands of homes built in the decades after the city’s farm fields became subdivisions, and plenty of them are wearing the same siding they had when the first owners moved in. Rock Solid Exteriors has replaced siding on Macomb County homes since 1997. Our office sits on Hayes Road, which the city lists as its eastern boundary, and from there nearly every Sterling Heights address is a 5- to 15-minute drive.

Sterling Heights Homes and Their Siding
How the city was built
Sterling Heights was Sterling Township until it became a city in 1968. The library’s guide to researching local houses describes three waves: pre-1940s farmhouses, 1950s homes put up by plant workers on roomy lots facing the main roads, and 1960s subdivisions carved from old farms. By the 2020 census the city had 134,346 residents.
For siding, that means three very different jobs. Older farmhouses and 1950s homes along the main roads may have wood clapboard under one or two later layers of siding, and out-buildings sided at different times. The 1960s and 1970s subdivision homes may have aluminum siding or first-generation vinyl on the sides and back of a brick front. Homes built in the 1980s and 1990s usually have vinyl that is now faded, brittle and loose at the seams.
Wind and storm damage
Summer thunderstorms can peel loose siding right off a wall, particularly older vinyl whose locking edges have worn or cracked. Hail can crack brittle, aging vinyl and dent aluminum. If you have storm damage, we can inspect it for free and tell you whether a repair will blend in or whether it makes sense to talk to your insurance company.
We had some siding damage from summer storms and Tim from Rock Solid did an amazing job repairing the storm damage and making sure everything was right and secure again.

Winter is hard on siding, too
Freeze-thaw cycles and snow piled against the house push moisture into every gap. Where old window trim or J-channel was never flashed correctly, water runs behind the siding and rots the sheathing and sill plates over time. Vinyl also gets stiff in the cold and can crack if hit by a snow shovel or a falling icicle. A proper tear-off with new house wrap and flashed openings, plus products rated for freeze-thaw climates such as James Hardie’s HZ5 line, addresses those weak points.
Colors that work with Sterling Heights brick
Because so many homes here mix brick with siding, color choice is less about what looks good on a sample board and more about what looks good next to your specific brick and roof. Warm red and orange brick tends to pair well with tans, clays, deep greens and soft whites. Brown or multi-tone brick often works with grays, taupes and darker blues. Stone veneer at the base or around the entry can tie the two materials together. We will help you narrow it down on site, in daylight, against your actual house.
From Estimate to Cleanup: How It Works
- Consultation at your home. We measure every wall, check for damage and talk through looks, materials and budget.
- Samples and design. Compare colors and profiles against your brick, roof and trim before you commit.
- Clear written estimate. Tear-off, sheathing repair, wrap, siding, trim, soffit, fascia and gutters are all itemized. Ask about financing.
- Permits and scheduling. We pull the permits Sterling Heights requires and schedule your crew.
- Tear-off and weatherproofing. Old siding comes off, damaged wood is replaced and walls are wrapped and flashed.
- Installation. Siding and trim go up with attention to corners, windows and roof edges.
- Cleanup. Scraps and nails are picked up and hauled away.
- Final walk-around. We look over the finished job with you and explain the manufacturer warranties on your products. More on our warranties page.
Weather can affect timing, and we will always tell you where things stand:
Because of winter weather the job was delayed a bit but they really did a nice job on our siding. The crew was respectful of our property as they were working.

Sterling Heights Siding FAQs
Can you match new siding to the rest of my house after storm damage?
Often, yes. If the damaged area is limited and the original product and color are still available, a repair can blend in well. Older siding fades, though, so an exact match is not always possible. We will show you samples against your house and tell you honestly whether a repair will look right or whether re-siding a full wall or elevation makes more sense.
Is fiber cement worth the extra cost over vinyl in Sterling Heights?
It depends on your goals. James Hardie fiber cement costs more but offers a heavier, more wood-like look, and its HZ5 line is engineered for freeze-thaw climates like ours. Vinyl costs less and needs almost no upkeep. Many homeowners choose vinyl for the main walls and add stone or shake-look accents for character.
Should I replace my siding and garage siding at the same time?
If your garage is sided to match the house, yes. Replacing both together keeps the color and profile consistent, since new siding will not match weathered siding on a garage left behind.
Does new siding make my house more energy efficient?
Siding by itself is not insulation, but a replacement is the best opportunity to fix air leaks. When old siding comes off, walls can be wrapped in a weather-resistant barrier and gaps around windows and doors sealed and flashed. Ask us about insulated siding products if added wall insulation is a priority.
Do you install siding in winter?
Siding installation can go on into the colder months, but severe cold, snow and ice can delay exterior projects. If your job is scheduled in winter, we will be upfront about timing so you know what to expect.
