These three photos come from siding replacements in Mount Clemens, each on a different home. We only have after photos for these jobs, so we won’t guess what the houses looked like before. What they do show well is how much siding color, trim color and a shake accent can change the look of a house.
What we did
A porch home in blue-gray lap siding with white trim
The first home has a steep front gable over a covered front porch. The walls and gable are covered in blue-gray horizontal lap siding. Everything around it is white: the trim along the roof edges, the vented soffit under the overhangs, the wide trim around the pair of windows in the gable, the gutter along the porch roof, and the porch posts and railing. The porch ceiling is finished in white panels too.
A story-and-a-half home in white siding with black trim
The second home goes the other direction: white horizontal lap siding with black accents. The windows are trimmed in black, and the boxed-out front window section has black trim boards separating the windows, with white siding panels below them. The roof is covered in dark charcoal shingles, and a brick chimney rises from the roof. The high contrast between the white walls and black trim makes the windows stand out from the street.
A brick home with a charcoal shake-style gable
The third home is mostly brick. The siding work shows in the front-facing garage gable, which is filled with charcoal gray shake-style siding between the brick walls. The rake edges are wrapped in gray trim with gray vented soffit underneath, and the gutters and downspouts are gray to match. Against the tan and red brick and a light garage door, the dark shake gable becomes the focal point of the front of the house.
Why it matters for Michigan homes
None of these houses got a flashy makeover. Each one got siding and trim that suits the house. Here’s why those choices matter in our climate:
- Trim and soffit take the most weather. Roof edges, porch ceilings and window surrounds catch wind-driven rain and snowmelt. Wrapping them in low-maintenance material means no more scraping and repainting.
- Gables are exposed. A gable wall runs right up to the roofline, with little overhang to protect it. Covering it with durable siding, like shake-style siding, gives it lasting protection and a finished look.
- Vented soffit supports the attic. Soffit vents bring outside air into the attic, which helps keep moisture down and helps reduce ice dams in winter.
- Color is a long-term decision. Siding can last for decades, so it’s worth seeing real samples next to your brick, roof and front door before you choose.
