Concrete Contractor in Chesterfield Township, MI

Concrete Work for a Lakeside Township

Chesterfield Township runs from inland roads to the shore of Anchor Bay on Lake St. Clair. It covers about 30.6 square miles, including roughly 3 square miles of water, and had 45,376 residents in the 2020 census. First settled around 1830, organized as a township in 1842 and a charter township since 1989, it saw the Grand Trunk Railway arrive in 1865 and today includes nine unincorporated communities, among them Anchor Bay Gardens, Milton and Lottivue.

That mix of shoreline neighborhoods, older crossroads communities and newer subdivisions means concrete projects here are far from uniform. A driveway a few blocks from the bay faces different conditions than a patio in a subdivision farther inland. Rock Solid Exteriors’ concrete division works out of neighboring Clinton Township, and this page covers what we look at before we pour in Chesterfield.

Water Is the First Thing We Think About

Concrete does not fail on its own. It fails because the ground under it moves or because water gets where it should not be. In Chesterfield, water deserves extra attention.

  • Closer to the lake, ground can stay wet. Lake St. Clair set record-high water levels in 2019, and shoreline communities around the lake dealt with waves and flooding. Homes near the water can see wetter soil for long stretches, which makes base preparation and drainage especially important.
  • Flat lots drain slowly. If your lot is low and flat, without enough slope water sits against garages and foundations or ponds in the middle of a patio.
  • Sump and downspout discharge. It is common to find downspouts or sump lines emptying right onto an old driveway or walkway. Part of planning a new slab is deciding where that water will go instead.

We set grades so surface water moves away from your house and garage, and we talk with you about downspout extensions or discharge locations that work with the new concrete, not against it.

Driveways

Driveway replacement is where many concrete projects start. The goal is a slab that carries vehicles for decades without heaving, settling or scaling. Our approach:

  • Full removal of the old concrete or asphalt, rather than pouring over it.
  • A compacted base so the new slab is evenly supported. Soft or organic soil gets removed.
  • Air-entrained concrete. Concrete industry guidance says concrete exposed to freezing and thawing must be air-entrained, which gives freezing water room to expand without breaking the surface.
  • Control joints placed to keep cracks straight and where we want them.
  • Proper curing so the surface gains strength instead of drying too fast.

If you have a two- or three-car garage, widening the driveway or adding a parking pad beside it is worth pricing at the same time. See more on our driveway replacement page.

Patios for Backyard Living Near the Bay

Chesterfield summers are made for time outside. A concrete patio can be a simple broom-finished pad for a grill and table, or a larger space with curves, steps and decorative finishes. A few things we will talk through:

  • Size and shape. We mark it out on the lawn so you can see the footprint before we form it.
  • Where the water goes. Patios slope away from the house. On flat lots, that pitch matters more than people expect.
  • Finish choices. Broom finish is economical and slip-resistant. Exposed aggregate has a textured, pebbled look that hides dirt. Stamped concrete imitates stone, slate or brick. Stained concrete adds color.
  • Future plans. If you might add a hot tub, a covered structure or a fire feature later, tell us now so we can plan for it.

Walks, Steps and Garage Pads

We also replace front walks and side walks, pour new steps at doors and patios, and install garage pads for new or replacement garages. For homes with pools, we pour pool decks with slip-resistant finishes. Replacing a heaved walk that has become a tripping hazard is one of the most practical safety projects you can do.

Protecting New Concrete Through Its First Winter

Salt is hard on concrete, and it is hardest on young concrete. Concrete industry guidance is direct about this: do not use deicing salts such as calcium or sodium chloride on concrete during its first year. For that first winter:

  • Use sand for traction instead of salt.
  • Rinse off salty slush that cars carry onto a new driveway or garage floor.
  • Shovel promptly so snow is not packed into ice.

After the first year, using deicers sparingly and clearing slush still helps a driveway last.

What the Process Looks Like

  1. Estimate. We measure, look at grades, drainage, access and trees, and talk through finishes and budget.
  2. Scheduling and permits. We confirm what your township requires and pull the permits that apply.
  3. Removal and base. The old surface comes out, the base is prepared and compacted, and forms are set.
  4. Pour and finish. Concrete is placed, finished to the surface you chose, jointed and cured.
  5. Cleanup and care. We clean up the site and explain when you can walk and drive on the new concrete and how to care for it through its first winter.

One customer described her driveway and sidewalk project this way:

I had my concrete driveway and sidewalk replaced last month, and they did a fantastic job. Katie and Rob were very responsive to any questions I had. The work was done in 3 days including a decorative edge.

Chesterfield Concrete Questions

My lot is flat and close to the lake. Can a new driveway still drain?

Yes, with careful grading. We set the slope so water moves away from the house and garage, and we plan where downspouts and sump lines discharge so water does not end up on the new slab.

Can you widen my driveway or add a parking pad?

Yes. Widening a driveway or adding a pad beside it is a common project. We tie the new section in with proper joints and base preparation.

When can I salt my new concrete?

Avoid deicing salts during the first year. Use sand for traction and rinse off salty slush from vehicles.

Do you pull the permits?

Yes. We confirm what Chesterfield Township requires for your project and pull the permits that apply.

Rock Solid did an excellent job replacing my driveway, garage side access, and patio. I worked with Robert and Levi, who offered wonderful recommendations which made the final result even better than I could have imagined. The crew was hardworking, respectful, and communicative throughout the project and I’m thrilled with the beautiful outcome. The township inspector came out to pass the job and also took the time to admire and voice how impressed he was with the finished product. I highly recommend Rock Solid!

Rock Solid was great to work with. Planning our siding replacement with Levi went great and turned out awesome. They allowed us to decide how we wanted the house to look when they were done and went through our options with price points so we could decide what we wanted to spend. There were some challenges with our house that I suspected ahead of time, rock solids crew notified us of the issues and let decide how we wanted to proceed. The crew was very professional and worked with us to make sure it was correct when it was done. We did have a small issue with our door replacement but they made sure it was corrected. I highly recommend Rock Solid Exteriors, almost every job is going to run into issues, the important part is how they handle them, and Rock Solid made sure they did everything they promised and then some.
